    Posted: 07 October 2006 at 2:18pm
I've had a couple of people trying to set up this SmartAX MT882 modem on TalkTalk and they have had problems with connecting to the DSL line.

I've tried their help desk and have been cut off in both customer's houses.  When someone spoke to me, they knew nothing about this model.

I've found a manual for it which has shed some light, but has anyone successfully connected with one?

I just searched for that router on google and it took me to russian & various Indian sites ........ eekk. Not good!

The settings for UK are

PPPoA
VPI 0
VCI 38

If its not seeing the line (surely it must have some sort of stats) then have you plugged the router into the main telephone socket.

Thanks for your reply Roady
The settings are as you state

On customer had a Tiscali bb account before and the cables used are known good

The other one I've been told that the setup CD doesn't always save username and password so the WAN settings need to be set manually and then saved

The one I've come across connected OK with the set up cd, but if the modem itself is powered off by choice or in the event of a power cut, you have to reinstall it before it will give a connection again. ? (Powering the pc off does not cause any problems.)

I initially installed my MT882 modem and set up talktalk broadband without any issues. After a few hours the connection was lost and the only way to reconnect was to reinstall the modem. I am now stuck in this cycle of having to reinstall the modem - only takes 4 minutes now that I've done it so many times ;o) - and then only being connected for an hour or two before the connection is lost. The connection also goes if I switch off the modem and switch it on again, and also sometimes when I restart the pc. Talktalk technical support say they know nothing about this modem, and the phone number they gave me to call instead gives me a recorded message relating to a wirless modem (not the MT882). Anyone got any suggestions??

That just crazy! The cost of having decent memory in the modem is next to nothing

How can TT say they know nothing about this modem? They sent it! And, they encourage you to have their modem so they can give specialised help if problems arise.    I wonder if Mr Dunstone has one of these at his home.

The problems you are having and the TT response are unacceptable. It's unfit for purpose and they haven't suggested anything otherwise. Remember that TT's website gives answers to FAQs and they cover returning modems and faulty modems on the broadband FAQ page. They specifically say:-

If your recommended TalkTalk modem is faulty, please contact customer services on 0870 444 1820. If they can't help you fix the problem, they will send you a replacement.

Demand one! (And, so you're not without some sort of service, keep yours in the meantime whilst they get round to sending you another.)

Busagrin & Paneleiro,

As a matter of interest, are you using ethernet cable or USB lead? Have you tried using USB instead of ethernet or vice versa? Can't think why this should make any difference, but worth a punt?

(I'm using ethernet cable and only have to reinstall if I turn the modem off, so my approach in the meantime is to leave it on constantly. Please could someone tell that to the investigating officer after the fire.    Mind you, I have brief intermittent connection dropouts as well, which may or may not be the fault of the modem.)

I'd urge any TT customer who's having trouble with this modem to name it specifically and send them a mail (as well) through 'Contact Us'. Why should Talk Talk provide equipment with such problems and then expect their customers to pay semi-premium rates to try to get it sorted out? These last posts have arisen in a matter of a few hours, so how many people out there must be having this?
